I keep finding myself going off on tangents, adding scenes that don’t really belong, or ending up somewhere completely different from where I started. By the time I finish a chapter, I’m not even sure what it was supposed to be about anymore.”

Stories have a tendency to tell themselves. Even the best-laid plans often go by the wayside when you actually get into the flow of writing. Characters have a mind of their own, and often plot holes will require a shift in perspective, all of which can lead to chapters that feel meandering or off topic.

During a first draft, your story is still finding its shape. As much as we’d all love to sit down and write, and end up with a fully formed novel, that’s rarely the reality of writing a novel. So it’s important to remember to be kind to yourself and realise that your early drafts are still you discovering what you want your story to be. It’s normal for things to get a little off track.

Wandering chapters aren’t a sign of bad writing. They’re a result of you flexing your creative muscles and exploring the possibilities available in your narrative. But if you still feel like your writing needs more focus, then let’s explore some techniques to keep your writing on track.

What is your chapter for?

Before you can keep a chapter on topic, you need to know what “on topic” means. Every chapter should have a reason for existing in your story. It should develop character, move the plot forward, provide important background, or introduce something new. Your chapter should end with something changing from where the chapter started. This could be anything from a revelation, a decision, or even a setback; a relationship might change, or it might even set up the stakes.

Each chapter is like a mini-story with its own beginning, middle, and end. It should have a question it’s trying to answer or a problem that needs to be solved, even if it’s as simple as making sure a character gets somewhere on time.

If you’re really stuck, you can try the ABDCE structure on a chapter-level, not just a plot level: Action, Background, Development, Climax, Ending. Start with your character being active in the chapter. Set up the background of why they are in that situation. Develop the stakes. Bring it to a climax and make sure it ends in a way that moves the story on.

Start with a clear intention

If you know what you want to write about before you sit down to start, you’ll be able to write with more focus. You don’t need a detailed outline; all you need is an idea of where you want your chapter to start and end.

Before you begin a chapter, think about:

What needs to happen for the story to move forward?

What does your character want in this scene?

How should the reader feel at the end compared to the beginning?

Having an idea of direction before starting acts like a compass. When you find yourself veering off course, you can check back with your intention and ask yourself if the chapter is serving your vision or pulling away from it.

Recognise the difference between exploration and digression

Not every tangent is a problem. Sometimes, what feels like wandering is actually your subconscious working through important story elements. You might catch a character detail or thematic connection you hadn’t planned on (after all, characters do often like to get away from us).

What you need to do is learn to recognise when exploration is serving your chapter and when it’s distracting you from moving your plot forward. A useful test is asking yourself whether your current exploration deepens a reader’s understanding of the character, conflict, or world in a way that matters to the story. Or you could cut the chapter without losing anything essential, then you’ve probably gone too far off track.

If a tangent is genuinely good but doesn’t belong in the current chapter, don’t delete it; just save it for later. I have a whole project reserved for “homeless scenes” that might find a better home later in the project or in an entirely different one.

Use the “enter late, leave early” principle

Chapters often lose focus because they start too early or end too late. Especially when you’ve done a lot of worldbuilding, it’s easy to feel like you need to show every step of a journey or every moment of a conversation. This serves you as a writer, but doesn’t really serve the reader. Readers really only care about the essential parts.

Enter your chapter as close to the main action or conflict as possible (you can even start right in the middle!) skipping the preamble, the travel time, the small talk. You can write it in your first draft, but edit it on in revision.

Similarly, once the chapter’s central question has been answered (or complicated), you can just bring your chapter to an end. You don’t need to tie everything up neatly. In fact, leaving on a cliffhanger can entice readers into the next chapter.

This principle naturally keeps chapters focused because it forces you to really drill down into what the “main event” of each chapter actually is.

Keep your PoV character’s goals in sight

Your point-of-view character is the anchor of your chapter. Their goals, fears, and desires should drive the action. When chapters go off-topic, it’s often because the focus has drifted away from what the PoV character wants and why it matters.

Your characters need a goal, a motivation, and a conflict that drives everything that they do. What do they want right now? What’s stopping them from getting it? How are they responding to those obstacles?

If a character is passively observing a scene, this is often a sign the a chapter is losing focus. Your character should be actively engaged with the conflict of the chapter, even if that conflict is internal.

Be free with your drafts and ruthless with your revision

Be as meandering as you want with your first draft. As the late, great, Terry Pratchett said, “The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.”

When it comes to revision, you have to be a bit more focused. You’re taking your meandering thoughts and putting them into a form that will best serve your readers. Your first draft is for you. Anything after that is for them. So you need to approach revision with a critical eye, making sure that you can clearly see what a chapter is about and that everything around it supports that central premise.

Fundamental things to ask yourself are:

Does this advance the plot?

Does this reveal character?

Does this build the world in a way that matters?

Does this create or heighten tension?

“How do you keep a chapter on topic?
