For this reason, I recommend a little tactic called \u201caesthetic isolation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea behind aesthetic isolation is to create a specific environment or set of conditions that allow you to focus on your work while still being able to relax and enjoy yourself; only read certain books, watch specific movies or shows, and listen to particular music genres that aid the creative process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why choose aesthetic isolation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re writing a story, it\u2019s extremely <a href=\"https:\/\/novlr.org\/the-reading-room\/turn-off-the-tv-write-a-novel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">easy to be influenced by your entertainment<\/a>. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can mean an influence that doesn\u2019t fit your novel\u2019s style. Aesthetic isolation allows you to enjoy the things that bring you joy without disrupting your creative flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re writing a murder mystery but find yourself reading romance novels, you could become so inspired by the love story that your novel incorporates those elements, even if it doesn\u2019t serve your narrative. It\u2019s easy to get carried away and take your novel on a long detour that you eventually have to backtrack on in revision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aesthetic isolation lets you stay focused, with your project at the centre, but without the stress of constant work. What are some comparative titles that you draw inspiration from? How do you picture your <a href=\"https:\/\/novlr.org\/the-reading-room\/a-foolproof-character-cheat-sheet-with-downloadable-template\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">characters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/novlr.org\/the-reading-room\/how-to-craft-the-perfect-story-setting-with-downloadable-template\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">setting<\/a>? You might even like to develop a <a href=\"https:\/\/novlr.org\/the-reading-room\/from-concept-to-creation-building-a-mood-board-for-your-writing-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mood board<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/novlr.org\/the-reading-room\/how-to-use-pinterest-as-a-writer-an-introduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pinterest<\/a> that gathers all these aesthetic cues together in a single place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I describe my own novel as <em>Outlander <\/em>meets <em>Doctor Who<\/em> meets <em>Lost. <\/em>My aesthetic is seafaring, 19th-century castles, mysterious islands, and time travel. My aesthetic isolation, therefore, obviously includes reading and watching the series that have inspired me, but I can also supplement it with other things that fit that mood and theme. But, I have to be very careful not to overindulge in the wrong <a href=\"https:\/\/novlr.org\/the-reading-room\/why-we-talk-about-book-genres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">genre<\/a> so that I can maintain the aesthetic I\u2019ve chosen for my novel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does aesthetic isolation work for every writer? Nothing works for <em>everyone<\/em>. But it\u2019s definitely worth a try if you struggle with any of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Difficulty maintaining your genre standards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sticking to your outline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accidentally putting in irrelevant scenes that you like but that don\u2019t go with the rest of your novel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of focus on your story\u2019s overall goal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Aesthetic isolation can be a powerful tool for anyone who struggles to focus on a project while also enjoying their free time.
