Writing a novel is tricky. There, I said it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve read so many books about the writing process, not because I truly believe that process is found in a book, but because the process itself is rather daunting. There’s an assumption that writers like Stephen King<\/a>, for instance, will have the answers we need in book form ready to make us all bestsellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’d always hoped an expert or an author I admire would just say, “Hi, here, this is my writing process right here,” and slip me a sheet of paper with the best writing advice ever that explains all their tips and tricks and deep, dark secrets about writing an incredible piece of fiction (or non-fiction).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I didn’t realize was that most of them already had!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The single most overstated and best bit of writing advice is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Just write.” <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That advice always seemed incredibly unhelpful. But then I simply began putting words on paper. And guess what! It was still difficult, but it turned out they were right. The more words you put on the page, the more of your story world you build, the closer you are to a finished story, and the easier the process gets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more you write, the better you get at it. There is no denying that practice makes the master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is “just write” the best advice?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. It gets you started<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The hardest part of writing is often just getting started. Staring at a blank page can be intimidating, and it’s easy to get caught up in perfectionism or self-doubt. But when you take the advice to “just write,” you give yourself permission to put words on the page without worrying about whether they’re perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. It helps you find your voice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Writing regularly helps you develop your unique writing voice<\/a>. The more you write, the more you’ll start to recognize patterns in your writing style, and you’ll become more confident in expressing yourself through your words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. It builds discipline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Writing is a skill that requires practice and discipline. When you make a habit<\/a> of writing regularly, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day, you’re building the discipline necessary to finish a writing project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
